C/R: Road accident kills 189 road users within eleven months

Head of the Central Regional Road Safety Authority, Ms. Linda Affortey Annan says a total of 189 people were killed through road accidents in the Region from January to November 2021.

Making this disclosure at the launch of the Stay Alive campaign at Winneba Junction on Monday, December 11, 2021, she further stated that a total of 1,389 were also injured through road accidents in the region.

She also gave a comparative analysis of the situation this year compared to that of last year. The analysis revealed that;

  • Road accident cases increased by 7.4 per cent as compared to 2020.
  • Cars involved in the accident was decreased by 19 per cent as compared to 2020.
  • Pedestrian knockdown increased by 11 per cent.
  • Death cases decreased by 15 per cent
  • Injuries decreased by 0.8 per cent.

Ms. Annan pledged the commitment of herself and her outfit to see to the success of the Stay Alive Campaign ahead of the yuletide.

Mr. Sampson Odoi, Coordinator for Street Sense Organisation, a Partner of the campaign also said that data given by the Ghana Police Service indicates that the Accra – Cape Coast – Takoradi road has been identified among five (5) other roads as the most accident-prone roads in Ghana.

This stretch is however considered the first among the five in terms of the number of accidents recorded on it. He added that the cause of most crashes on this road is overspeeding while navigating the curves on the road. Overtaking among others also contributes to the challenge of high accident cases within the region. He said.

Some stakeholders present at the launch like the Fire Service, Police, Ambulance Service, and leadership of driver unions together shared words of advise and counsel with the drivers to take precautions in other to save lives and properties.
