The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the reduction in the number of ministers under the John Dramani Mahama administration has resulted in significant savings for the state.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the government had deliberately taken steps since assuming office in 2025 to reduce public expenditure.
According to him, one of the key cost-saving measures had been the reduction in ministerial appointments compared to the previous administration.
“Under the previous government, there were over 100 ministers and deputy ministers, all of whom were entitled to benefits such as four-wheel drive vehicles, saloon cars, fuel allocations, and either state bungalows or rent allowances,” he said.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted that the cost burden went beyond ministers and their deputies, pointing out that the previous administration also engaged more than 300 political staffers, further increasing government expenditure.
“Beyond the ministers and their deputies, the previous government also had over 300 staffers, and all of that added to the budget of the government,” he stated.
He stressed that the financial implications of maintaining such a large political administration were substantial.
