Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has given a one-week ultimatum to a newly constituted committee tasked with investigating the assault on nurses and health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

The directive follows the circulation of a viral video capturing a violent altercation between some relatives of a patient and medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety of health workers in the line of duty.
Addressing journalists after a courtesy meeting with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) on Tuesday, August 19, the Minister affirmed his commitment to get to the root of the matter.
“I was at the hospital yesterday and interacted with the health workers. One of the reasons I went there was to reassure them of our commitment and encourage them to return to the wards.
“They were demoralised, so I had to assure them of a thorough investigation. After my visit, we constituted a committee to investigate the matter within a week, after which the law will take its course,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the visit by GIZ focused on strengthening cooperation with the Ministry of Health in areas including infrastructure development, health system upgrades, and boosting the capacity of regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
