Ablekuma North MP-elect Ewurabena Aubynn sworn in

The Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been sworn into office today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.

Aubynn’s swearing-in follows her victory in a closely contested parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency. The rerun was held across 19 polling stations after the Electoral Commission (EC) nullified the results of the original December 2024 parliamentary election due to allegations of electoral irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets.

The EC’s decision to withhold the final results of the December polls came after complaints from various stakeholders about discrepancies in figures, unsigned result sheets, and procedural breaches during collation.

In the rerun held earlier this month, Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious with 34,090 votes, narrowly edging out the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who secured 33,881 votes.

Aubynn’s win marks a significant gain for the NDC, as her addition to the parliamentary caucus will give the party a two-thirds majority in the 275-seat legislature. This majority not only strengthens the NDC’s legislative leverage but could also have far-reaching implications for parliamentary approvals, constitutional amendments, and other critical votes requiring supermajority consensus.

The swearing-in ceremony, which will be held during today’s sitting of Parliament, is expected to be attended by party leaders, MPs, and dignitaries.

It also marks a major milestone in the NDC’s 2025 legislative agenda, especially as the party seeks to consolidate power ahead of key national reforms.
