The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has outlined measures being implemented by the Mahama administration to prevent further tragedies following the recent drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School.

The students, all members of the school’s cadet corps, drowned in the Black Volta River near Dikpe in the Upper West Region on June 14, 2025.
Addressing Parliament on July 2, Muntaka highlighted a series of coordinated interventions by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and relevant stakeholders aimed at enhancing water safety and raising public awareness.
“Rt. Hon. Speaker, the Regional Security Council, through coordinated efforts with all relevant agencies, have put in place the following measures: regular sensitisation of canoe owners/operators and residents along the Black Volta Basin; sensitisation of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety; provision of life jackets to canoe operators by the Ghana Maritime Authority; and regular monitoring to ensure safety standards are upheld,” he said.
He further stated that REGSEC will ensure all canoes are properly maintained, and that psychosocial support will be provided to Lawra SHS students, especially the three survivors of the incident.
Muntaka expressed hope that these interventions would help prevent similar incidents in the future, describing the deceased students as “future leaders whose lives were tragically cut short.”
