Please do not abandon the Agenda 111 projects for political reasons – Opong Nkrumah tells Mahama.

Former Minister for Housing, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, has called on President John Mahama not to abandon the Agenda 111 projects initiated by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for political reasons.

Mr. Nkrumah expressed concern that halting or disregarding these projects could significantly hinder the development of the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

“Mr President, we beg you in the name of God, please do not abandon Agenda 111 for political reasons,” he said during a press conference on Thursday following the reading of the 2025 budget.

He stressed that should the President fail to continue and complete the hospitals, “The millions of citizens in remote districts who are looking forward to their lives being safeguarded by this healthcare intervention will be at risk.

In an effort to continue and complete the project, President Mahama aimed to franchise the unfinished facilities across the country. However, Mr. Nkrumah believes that this approach would “jeopardize the efforts at achieving universal health coverage.”

He urged President Mahama to view the Agenda 111 initiative as a national priority, rather than a political project, and to continue the work started by the previous government for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Mr. Nkrumah also highlighted the importance of healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas where access to quality medical facilities remains severely limited.

The Agenda 111 project, launched by the NPP government, aims to construct 111 district hospitals across Ghana to improve healthcare delivery in underserved areas.

However, as of now, only three of the facilities have been completed before the NPP left power in 2024. Most of the facilities in various districts are still at the foundation or roofing stages.

The initiative, which began under former President Akufo-Addo, seeks to address the healthcare deficit, particularly in remote districts.
