Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko appointed acting NCA boss

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The announcement was made on the NCA’s Facebook page on Friday, January 24.

Rev. Fianko’s ascension to this role follows the resignation of his predecessor, Joe Anokye, earlier this month.

Mr. Anokye, who served as Director-General under the previous New Patriotic Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stepped down amid speculation about his future endeavors.

As the Acting Director-General, Rev. Fianko will face the dual challenge of consolidating the gains made by his predecessors and addressing the evolving needs of Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

The NCA, which serves as the regulatory body for telecommunications, broadcasting, and electronic communications in Ghana, plays a critical role in ensuring that Ghana’s digital ecosystem remains robust, inclusive, and globally competitive.

Ghana’s telecommunications industry has undergone significant transformations in recent years, including the expansion of broadband connectivity, the rollout of 4G and 5G networks, and increasing consumer demands for better services.

In his new role, Rev. Fianko is expected to spearhead initiatives to enhance regulatory frameworks, foster innovation, and address issues such as data protection, cybersecurity, and fair competition among operators.

One pressing issue awaiting his attention is the ongoing debate around spectrum allocation and the need for equitable distribution among industry players.
