The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has dismissed claims that the Attorney-General is being prejudicial in the case involving former National Signal Bureau Director, Kwabena Adu Boahene.
On Monday, March 24, Dr. Srem-Sai defended Dr Dominic Ayine’s assertion that the evidence against Mr Adu Boahene is strong enough to secure a conviction.
He argued that such a stance is not unusual, as the Attorney-General is not a neutral arbiter but a party in legal proceedings.
Attorney Generals all the time have a stance on any case that they take to court. They have their position. The Attorney General is not an arbiter who is required to be fair and not to prejudice a case,” he explained.
His comments came after concerns were raised over the Attorney-General’s confidence in securing a conviction even before Mr Adu Boahene was officially charged.
The New Patriotic Party members in Parliament have argued that such pronouncements could influence public perception and judicial processes.
However, Dr. Srem-Sai insisted that by the nature of his role, the Attorney General always takes a stance in cases he prosecutes.
Anytime he’s arresting someone or is putting a person before a court, that Attorney General is always saying that I have what it takes to obtain a conviction. So it is nothing new, it is nothing out of place,” he added.
Mr. Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, were recently arrested in connection with an alleged financial misconduct case involving a $7 million cyber defense contract.
