The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The court remanded him into police custody, with a scheduled reappearance on April 1, 2025.
The GJA in a statement noted that it has been in contact with senior police officials for updates on the arrest and prosecution process. The association expressed particular appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for their efforts in advancing the case.

More than six years after Ahmed Suale’s assassination on January 16, 2019, this arrest marks the most significant progress in bringing his killers to justice. The GJA noted that the development follows persistent and relentless advocacy by the association for action on the case.
While welcoming the arrest, the GJA urged the Police not to relent in their pursuit of other suspects involved in the murder.
“We hope this breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder,” the GJA stated.
The unresolved murder of Ahmed Suale has significantly impacted Ghana’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index. The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to seeing justice served and is closely monitoring the case’s progress.
The association recalled its previous ultimatum to take the case to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if concrete action was not taken by the end of March 2025.
“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the Police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” the GJA stated.
The association also demanded updates on other unresolved cases of assaults against journalists, including the case of Latif Iddrisu, which it has earmarked for submission to the ECOWAS Court.
Meanwhile, the GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.
Both organizations have expressed their commitment to pursuing the case on international platforms to seek justice for Ahmed Suale.
The GJA remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, emphasizing that this development must be the first step in ensuring accountability for crimes against journalists in Ghana.
