The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has announced an immediate ban on the issuance of license under the community mining scheme.
The directive was made after he received a detailed research report conducted on mining activities in Ghana.
Members from the Forestry Commission, Water Resources Commission, and Environmental Protection Agency among others formed the committee.
According to him, the community mining scheme did not serve its purpose.
The current government will therefore convert the community mining concession into community cooperatives.
Additionally, the issuance of mining licenses should begin at the District level where all chiefs and other authorities are properly consulted.
