In a bid to minimize road crashes, the Mankessim Peace Co-operative Drivers Union, led by the Vice Chairman Mr. Emmanuel Nyame, also known as Master Kosey, has launched an initiative to encourage station drivers to avoid reckless driving practices.
Mr. Nyame identified overspeeding, overloading, and faulty tires as major causes of road accidents, particularly among “floating drivers” or “Ohyew Drivers” who load passengers along the roads.
To address this issue, the union has been motivating drivers every year for those who have joined the station to continue working there, rather than returning to the roads.
As part of this initiative, the Union donated food items, including rice and oil, as well as cash to its drivers. The program aims to reduce reckless driving, bring joy and a sense of belonging to station drivers, and ultimately decrease road accidents.
Under Master Korsey’s and rest of the union leadership, they have also implemented measures to improve driving safety, such as reducing the number of seats in sprinter cars from five (5) to four(4) to ensure passenger comfort. Additionally, the union has purchased land for the members to build their homes, incentivizing them to stay at the station and avoid speeding.
Voice of Mr Emmanuel Nyame
The drivers expressed their gratitude for the union’s kind gesture, which brings hope and peace to their homes, especially during the holiday season. They praised the leadership and wished for continued improvement in their lives.
