Human and environment rights organization Challenging Heights has strongly condemned the recent clashes between the military and members of the Obuasi community at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine, resulting in eight fatalities and numerous injuries.
In a press release, the organization expressed disappointment at the immediate labeling of victims as “thugs” or “illegal miners” before any thorough investigation. Challenging Heights emphasized the need to listen to the concerns of the local population regarding human and environmental rights violations.
The organization highlighted the growing concern over mining-related clashes becoming a recurring national security threat. They pointed to the ongoing impoverishment of mining communities and the persistent human rights abuses faced by local residents.
While acknowledging the legal right of mining companies to operate, Challenging Heights stressed the importance of respecting the rights of local communities and their environment.
According to the organization, although mining companies have permission to operate, “it is also incumbent for them to respect the rights of the local people and their environment.” the statement said.
The organization is therefore calling for the setting up of a commission of inquiry to probe into the issues underlying this clash.
