The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has made a proactive decision to postpone its planned pipeline maintenance by two weeks, helping to alleviate potential power challenges in Ghana. This collaborative effort follows extensive discussions led by a technical committee established by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, aimed at addressing the upcoming energy concerns
The maintenance was originally set to begin this week and was highlighted by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) as a crucial issue threatening the nation’s electricity supply. GRIDCo expressed that the combination of existing fuel shortages for thermal plants and a temporary reduction in gas supply from the pipeline could significantly impact Ghana’s power generation capabilities.
During a high-level meeting with representatives from WAPCo, GRIDCo officials, and the technical committee, the stakeholders engaged in thorough deliberations about the potential implications of the maintenance on the national grid. Concerns regarding the risk of power outages that could disrupt both businesses and households were a significant focus of the discussions.
WAPCo’s agreement to delay the maintenance provides authorities with additional time to secure alternative fuel supplies and work towards stabilizing electricity generation.
Context on the Maintenance and Fuel Situation
WAPCo’s pipeline is essential for transporting natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and this scheduled maintenance is key for ensuring the pipeline’s ongoing safety and efficiency. However, given Ghana’s heavy reliance on gas to power its thermal plants, any disruptions could have notable effects on electricity supply.
The country is currently addressing a fuel supply deficit, which has put further strain on the power sector. In response, efforts are underway to import additional light crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to counterbalance the existing gas supply shortfall.
The government and relevant stakeholders are actively working to expedite fuel imports and develop contingency plans to ensure a consistent power supply during the forthcoming maintenance period. Through these combined efforts, Ghana aims to maintain a stable and reliable energy system for its citizens.
