Bernard Ahiafor has been appointed as the chair of Parliament’s Appointment Committee.

Parliament has made a significant move by approving the composition of its Appointments Committee, charged with the vital responsibility of vetting and recommending nominees for ministerial and other key appointments. This committee will be led by the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, with Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as Vice Chairperson.

In addition, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been appointed as the Minority Leader and Ranking Member, while Patricia Appiagyei will take on the role of Deputy Ranking Member. The Appointments Committee’s key function is to meticulously scrutinize and recommend individuals nominated by the President for positions such as Ministers of State and their Deputies, as well as other roles outlined in the Constitution or relevant legislation.

During a session on January 8, 2025, Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson presented the committee’s report regarding its composition. He expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to uphold parliamentary standards, stating, “The committee respectfully recommends to the house the adoption of this report and the approval of the membership of the appointment and business committee, as well as the reconstitution of the committees of selection based on the ratio of 183 to 88. Mister Speaker, I shall submit.”

This initiative showcases Parliament’s commitment to ensuring a thorough and transparent process for key appointments, reinforcing democratic governance in the country.
