Mahama Acknowledges Akufo-Addo as a Respectful Opponent

In his inaugural address on January 7th, President John Dramani Mahama expressed his sincere respect and admiration for his predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Reflecting on their long political journey, President Mahama highlighted the unique and respectful relationship they have built over the years, despite their differing political affiliations

“You have, without exception, been a worthy opponent,” Mahama remarked, receiving applause from the audience. He noted the significance of the day, stating, “Today’s exercise between the outgoing president, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and I feels a bit like déjà vu,” as it mirrored their previous transition on January 7, 2017.

Mahama reminisced about their shared experiences in Parliament since 1996, emphasizing the strong bond formed through years of dedication to public service. “It seems fitting that it is with Nana Akufo-Addo that I twice shared this stage and this unique historical distinction,” he noted, acknowledging their mutual respect even while representing opposing political parties.

He also recalled the personal warmth of their relationship, mentioning how Akufo-Addo always greeted him with a friendly smile and the nickname “Johnnie.”

As he concluded his tribute, President Mahama expressed deep appreciation for their shared experiences. “Nana, as this will be our final meeting under these circumstances, I look back on our journey with gratitude. You have consistently exemplified what it means to be a worthy opponent,” he concluded.
