Independent candidate arrested for organizing rally.

Joseph Kofi Damte, an independent Parliamentary Candidate in the Assin South Constituency, has been arrested by the Central Regional Police Command for organising a political rally ahead of the December 7 elections without duly notifying the police.

According to a statement signed by the Regional Public Affairs Unit, Dep Supt Irene Serwaa Oppong, the act goes contrary to specific laws including Public Order, Criminal and other offences as well as Imposition of Restriction Act.

She indicated that Mr Damte and his participants at the said rally were not in facemasks and did not observe the social distancing protocol.

Narrating what led to Mr Damte’s arrest, she said, on Monday, July 7, the Assin Divisional Police Command received information that parliamentary candidate had organised a political campaign rally at Assin Aworoso, a town in the constituency.

Although when they got to the scene, the event had ended, information gathered by the patrol team revealed that truly, such activity had occurred.

“The Central Region CID has taken over the case for an investigation into the matter. The suspect is in police custody assisting the investigation,” she added.
