High Court adjourns Assin North MP’s case

The Accra High Court has deferred its ruling on the prosecution’s prima facie case against Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson to March 27.

The court was to determine whether the prosecution had made substantial case against the Assin North MP for him to open his defense.

The legislator has been charged with offenses including deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, and perjury and false declaration for office. He has pleaded not guilty and remains on bail.

Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh had ordered defense lawyers as well as the prosecution to file their written submissions simultaneously in order to make her final decision on Monday, March 3.
When the case was called on Monday morning, lawyers from the Attorney-General’s office indicated that they were yet to file their submissions and prayed for additional time to do so.

Lead Counsel for Gyakye Quayson, Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata did not oppose. “We have no objection to the prosecution’s plea for more time. We will respectfully request that in these circumstances where they have sufficient time, they should address the matters raised.

“I appreciate that the court ordered simultaneous filing of submissions but it’s my respectful submission that in the circumstances that we now have it’ll be in the interest of justice for Her Ladyship to make a slight adjustment to enable filing,” he noted
Justice Ekue Yanzuh then adjourned her ruling to March 27 and ordered the prosecution to file their written submissions before the close of Tuesday, March 4.
