President John Dramani Mahama has announced the commencement of a major initiative to improve teacher welfare and attract educators to rural areas by building teacher accommodation units.
Speaking during his first State of the Nation Address on Thursday, President Mahama emphasized that the initiative dubbed the “Teacher Dabre Initiative”, will ensure that every new school built in the country includes housing for teachers.

“As part of our ‘Teacher Dabre Initiative’, the construction of teacher accommodation units to improve welfare and attract teachers to rural areas will commence this year,” he stated.
“No new school would be built in this country without teachers’ accommodation,” he added.
The move seeks to address the long-standing challenge of teacher shortages in remote areas, where the lack of housing and poor living conditions discourage educators from accepting postings.
The initiative will enhance teacher retention, improve the quality of education, and bridge the urban-rural educational gap.
