I am honored by my appointment – Dr. Asiama.

Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has stated that he felt honored by his appointment as the new head of the central bank. “Since I began my career at the Bank of Ghana and eventually became a Deputy Governor, I never imagined there would be a day when I would stand alongside these esteemed individuals who have previously held the position of governor,” he remarked.

“To me, this appointment is a humbling experience, one that adds pressure on me to meet expectations as I move forward,” he continued. Dr. Asiama made these remarks in answer to a question from one of the media houses during a meeting with the two Deputy Governors of the bank on February 3, 2024, shortly after taking office. He expressed his dedication to collaborating with the current deputy governors to ensure the ongoing programs and initiatives are maintained.

Last week, President John Mahama announced Dr. Asiama’s nomination as the next Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval from the Council of State. This announcement followed, Dr. Addison’s notification of his terminal leave starting February 3, 2025, in anticipation of his retirement.

Dr. Addison’s term is set to conclude on March 28, 2025, in line with the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as revised. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Asiama was the Executive Chairman of Wessex Investment and Consultancy Limited, a role he has been occupying since 2018. Dr. Asiamah has been with the Bank of Ghana since 1996, progressively advancing through various departments until he became the Deputy Governor.

Dr. Asiama also underscored the strength of the team at the Bank of Ghana and their capacity to fulfill their duties. “One assurance I can provide is that we have a strong team, and we should be capable of continuing from where Dr. Ernest Addison has left off,” he emphasized. Regarding his rapport with the Deputy Governors, Dr. Asiamah shared that their working relationship has been excellent.

“For example, The First Deputy Governor Dr. Maxwell Opoku Afari and I began our careers at the Bank of Ghana in the same year, and we never anticipated reaching this stage. I believe this should serve as an inspiration for all of us,” he mentioned. Dr. Asiamah remarked that his appointment should inspire others to strive for excellence and achieve their best.
