President John Dramani Mahama participated in a high-level retreat on African Union (AU) Institutional Reforms, underway in Kenya.
And returned to Ghana today, the meeting which opened in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, over the weekend focused on the progress and future of AU reforms.
At the invitation of the Kenyan President, William Ruto, it is being attended by other heads of state across the continent.
President Ruto, who designated the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform in February 2024, would use the retreat to update fellow heads of state on the strides made in implementing the mandate given to him by the Assembly of the African Union.
The retreat provides an opportunity for President Mahama to contribute his leadership experience and insights to the growth of the AU as well as Ghana’s commitment to the Union’s agenda.
It is expected that President Mahama’s participation would enrich the discussions aimed at enhancing the efficiency, accountability, and sustainability of the AU.
The call for AU reforms was first made in 2016 when African leaders identified the urgent need to restructure the organisation to better address the continent’s challenges. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications addressed the media on the president visit to Kenya.
