President John Dramani Mahama has raised important concerns regarding the need for justice for individuals who tragically lost their lives during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. While he acknowledged the peaceful conduct of the 2024 elections, he emphasized that addressing these past incidents is crucial to deter future electoral violence and promote accountability.
During a special National Muslim prayer and thanksgiving service at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on January 10, Mahama stated, “Even though this election was largely peaceful, we must recognize the loss of life among our citizens. Reports indicate that nearly five individuals lost their lives during this election, and we must also remember that eight were killed during the 2020 elections.”
He underscored that failing to investigate these cases could lead to a culture of impunity. To that end, he called upon Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to initiate thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding these deaths and to hold accountable those responsible.
In a proactive step, President Mahama revealed that he has instructed his Executive Secretary, Callitus Mahama, to reach out to the IGP for an update on the status of these investigations. “Justice must be served,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability.
Furthermore, he encouraged the Attorney-General-designate, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to assess the situation regarding compensation for the bereaved families once he assumes office. “We would like the Attorney General to determine a fair and adequate compensation for the families,” Mahama indicated.
This gathering, which included prominent leaders, the Chief Imam, and the wider Muslim community, served as an opportunity not only to express gratitude but also to seek divine guidance for the nation’s progress and unity.
