The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, positioned at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, has unfortunately been vandalized. According to police sources, they received reports about the incident and arrived at the scene shortly after, discovering the extent of the damage that had been done.
The statue, which was unveiled on November 6, 2024, to honor the former president, was discovered toppled, with significant damage from the head to the knee area. The vandalism reportedly occurred around 1:30 am on January 13, 2025. It is worth noting that just a month prior, in December 2024, the statue had undergone repairs to its leg due to earlier damage that sparked discussions among residents about its structural integrity or potential vandalism.
Eyewitnesses observed that repairs to the statue had taken place on December 18, 2024, by a small team, including two men and a woman, with police presence ensuring security during the process.
The statue has been a topic of debate within the community, as its presence has raised questions about its significance and the allocation of resources toward public monuments in light of ongoing developmental needs. This incident highlights the importance of community dialogue regarding such symbols and their role in representing civic values and the public interest.
