Fire Outbreak at the Winneba Lands Commission MCE to discuss wayforward with management.

There was a fire outbreak at the Lands Commission office in Winneba. This incident occurred on Friday, October 27, 2023 at about 5 pm, causing damage to some part of their building and its contents.

According to Mr. Jude Oppong, Assistant Divisional Officer at the Winneba Fire Station, he and his team launched a swift response to the incident, which allowed them to contain the fire before it caused extensive damage.

He said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, initial reports suggest that the fire could be as a result of an electrical fault. He explained that they saw flames at the meter side of the building on arrival.

“We were at the office when we had a running call about a fire outbreak at the Lands Commission office. On arrival we saw flames at the meter side of the building close to where the switches were”, he said.

The Lands Commission is responsible for managing land issues in Ghana, including land registration, surveying, and land tenure.

He further added that because of their swift response to the call, they were able to curb the fire before it got worse. He mentioned a few items like chairs and tables, roofs and ceilings that got damaged.

“ We were able to get here on time by the grace of God and because of our professionalism, we were able to dazzle the fire earlier than expected. A few chairs, tables, ceilings and roofs were few of things that got damaged”, he said.

Mr Oppong also expressed concerns about the access route leading to the office. He said that it was quite difficult getting to the building and urged that something should be done about the access route.

“ We had a lot of challenges getting to the place. Timely intervention by community members was what helped them to reach the building else the fire could have gotten worse. I think they should do something about the access route”, he added

He used the opportunity the urge all and sundry to make sure they tidy up the environment especially their offices and homes as most dirt like cobwebs, just to name a few are major fuels of fire.

He also added that awareness on the usage of fire extinguishers is quite low and there’s the need for training on that

“We realized that the had fire extinguishers but they were not able to use them, it means that they need a lot of training on how to use fire extinguishers”, he added.
