GNFS Urges Caution for Kantamanto Market Reconstruction

The Greater Accra Regional Fire Service has recommended that victims of the recent Kantamanto market fire refrain from immediate reconstruction of their shops. Following a devastating blaze that destroyed many structures, the Fire Service emphasizes the importance of fire safety measures before any rebuilding efforts commence.

At a recent press conference in Accra, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, the Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, encouraged the traders to seek professional advice to enhance their fire safety protocols. He stated, “I have communicated with the authorities and the victims, reminding them that without proper guidance, they risk facing similar tragedies in the future.”

He added, “If reconstruction is to proceed, it is crucial for the victims to consult with us. We can provide recommendations for standardized structures and suitable materials to ensure their safety.”

In response to claims by some victims alleging that fire officers exacerbated the situation by using petrol, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu firmly dismissed these accusations. He clarified, “It is utterly illogical to suggest that fire officers would pour petrol on a fire. Such actions would put their lives at risk. Our priority is to ensure the safety of the community and to provide support during this challenging time.”

The Greater Accra Regional Fire Service is committed to working closely with the market traders to promote safer rebuilding practices that will help prevent future incidents.
