In response to recent speculation, President Akufo-Addo’s office has clarified that there are no plans for a presidential pardon for eleven individuals currently serving prison sentences. Initial reports suggested that the president was considering exercising his constitutional prerogative of mercy to grant pardons to these individuals just before the end of his tenure.
The claims indicated that a comprehensive review of their cases had taken place, factoring in elements such as health conditions, duration of imprisonment, and other mitigating circumstances. Among those mentioned were notable figures such as William Ato Essien, the former CEO of Capital Bank, and Philip Assibit, who was convicted in connection with the GYEEDA scandal.
However, a statement from the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House confirmed that no pardons have been issued.
