Outgoing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed concerns regarding the establishment of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee, initiated by President-elect John Mahama. He characterized the committee as unnecessary, suggesting that it may primarily serve personal agendas rather than the public interest.
“I have serious reservations about the formation of the ORAL Committee,” he stated. Afenyo-Markin highlighted that, in his view, the committee lacks appropriate constitutional authorization and may be perceived as a tool for personal retaliation.
The ORAL Committee is tasked with investigating alleged corrupt activities involving members of the outgoing NPP government, with North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa serving as chairperson. The committee’s role includes referring findings to relevant authorities for further inquiry and prosecution.
However, Mr. Afenyo-Markin advocated for a more constructive approach to addressing corruption, urging the incoming government to consider enhancing support for existing state institutions equipped to combat crime, rather than establishing new committees like ORAL.
He shared his perspective, stating, “It is crucial that we approach the issue of corruption thoughtfully and within the framework of our existing laws.” He expressed a desire for cooperation and respect for the rule of law, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability for effective governance.
