A tragic building collapse in Accra New Town has left three people dead, and at least 20 others hospitalised, sparking renewed concerns over structural safety and enforcement of building regulations in the capital.

The incident occurred on Monday when a multi-storey structure suddenly gave way in the densely populated area, trapping several occupants beneath heaps of concrete and twisted metal. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as residents rushed to the site, desperately attempting to rescue victims before emergency services arrived.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service were swiftly deployed to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts. Working tirelessly for hours, rescuers managed to pull several survivors from the rubble, many of whom sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured were transported to nearby health facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have confirmed that three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He assured the public that a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse and to hold any responsible persons accountable.
Preliminary assessments suggest that structural weaknesses or possible non-compliance with building regulations may have contributed to the disaster, although officials say it is too early to draw firm conclusions.
The collapse has once again highlighted the dangers posed by unregulated construction and poor enforcement of building codes in parts of Accra, particularly in overcrowded communities like Accra New Town.
Residents are calling on authorities to intensify inspections and clamp down on illegal developments to prevent future tragedies.
As investigations continue, the nation mourns the lives lost while hoping for the swift recovery of those injured.
