2026 World Cup: Ghana Sets Aside $13.7m for Black Stars

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that the government has budgeted $13,776,965 (GH¢146,268,659.80) for the Ghana national football team’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament, set to take place in June across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has drawn Ghana into Group L alongside the Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team.

Appearing before Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee on Thursday, February 26, Mr. Adams provided a detailed breakdown of the proposed expenditure, covering preparations, group stage participation, and possible advancement into the knockout rounds.

Pre-tournament activities have been allocated $1,230,465 (GH¢13,063,723.90). This amount will fund a FIFA-approved training camp as well as four international friendly matches to fine-tune the squad ahead of the competition.

“The FIFA camp will involve a number of activities, including friendly matches that you organise. The pre-tournament estimate stands at $1,230,465, which is GH¢13,063,723.90, and this will finance the friendly matches,” the Minister explained.

The bulk of the budget — $6,284,000 (GH¢66,716,599) — is reserved for the group stage. This covers appearance fees, match bonuses, per diems for players and technical staff, and allowances for other officials attached to the team.

Mr. Adams noted that spending is expected to decline if Ghana advances beyond the group stage, particularly as appearance fees will no longer apply.

“When we reach the round of 32, our expenditure drops because you are not paying appearance fees at that stage. It reduces to $690,000, which is GH¢7,325,661,” he stated.

The round of 32 alone is projected to cost $690,000 (GH¢7,325,661), with further allocations dependent on how far the Black Stars progress in the tournament.

The announcement has set the stage for parliamentary scrutiny and public debate as Ghana prepares for its latest campaign on football’s biggest global platform.
