The Government of Ghana has officially renamed Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, marking a historic shift in the identity of the country’s premier aviation hub.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Transport as part of efforts to rebrand Ghana’s main gateway to the world and align it more directly with the capital city, Accra. According to government officials, the change is intended to enhance global recognition, strengthen the airport’s international brand, and reflect a modern national outlook.
For decades, the airport bore the name of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a central figure in the 1966 coup d’état. Over the years, the naming of the facility generated debate among sections of the public, with some advocating for a more geographically neutral and nationally inclusive identity.
Authorities have assured travelers and airline operators that the renaming will not disrupt airport operations, flight schedules, or travel documentation. Updates to signage, official records, aviation systems, and digital platforms are expected to be carried out gradually.
As Ghana’s busiest airport and a major West African hub, the newly named Accra International Airport continues to play a vital role in tourism, trade, and investment. Aviation analysts believe the move could further position Accra as a strategic destination for global business and travel.
