GHS Releases Latest Update on Medical Officer Postings; Majority Yet to Report

The Ghana Health Service (GHS), through its Human Resources Development Division, has released an updated status report on the placement of newly posted medical officers across the country as of Friday, 28th November 2025. The data provides a clear picture of regional reporting trends and highlights areas where more urgent follow-ups are required.

According to the report, out of 463 medical officers allocated nationwide, only 158 have reported to their respective regions — representing 34% of the total. A significant majority, 305 officers, are yet to assume duty.

Regional Breakdown

  • Greater Accra leads with the highest reporting rate, recording 80% (16 out of 20).
  • Ashanti Region follows closely with 76%, having received 25 out of its 33 allocated officers.
  • Central (59%) and Eastern (64%) also show relatively strong reporting rates.

However, several regions are facing critical gaps:

  • Savannah and North East recorded 0%, with none of their allocated officers reporting.
  • Upper West and Oti also posted very low figures, at 0% and 5% respectively.
  • Northern, Volta, and Western regions are also lagging, with fewer than 40% reporting.

Regions Most Affected

Some regions have particularly high numbers of officers yet to report:

  • Northern – 25 yet to report
  • Western North – 29 yet to report
  • Volta – 22 yet to report
  • Western – 23 yet to report

These gaps raise concerns about staffing in key health facilities, especially in rural and underserved communities.

The GHS notes at the bottom of the report that regional directors are encouraged to intensify engagement with the medical officers to improve reporting rates in the coming days. With the country’s health system relying heavily on equitable distribution of personnel, timely reporting remains crucial for maintaining quality healthcare delivery.
