The Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced the launch of a Gun Amnesty aimed at reducing the proliferation of illicit arms in the country.

The Gun Amnesty provides a safe and voluntary opportunity for citizens to surrender unregistered or illicitly held firearms without fear of prosecution. This initiative is further supported by a ban on the use of arms during traditional festivities, as well as restrictions on the importation and sale of firearms.
It stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce the number of illicit arms in
circulation, thereby enhancing public safety, national security, and social cohesion.
“The Ministry believes that this initiative will help create a safer environment for all Ghanaians,” it added.
To ensure the successful implementation of the initiative, the Ministry noted that it is engaging with key stakeholders, including Regional Ministers, traditional authorities, and community leaders, for sensitization and to mobilise public support.
According to him, robbery cases in 2024 were 1, 219 while 552 murder cases were recorded. As of July 2025, Robbery cases stand at 628, and 340 murder cases, of which they used arms to achieve them.
Therefore, any individual who has a gun in his or her custody should submit it without being arrested or prosecuted from 1st December 2025 to 15th January 2026.
Additionally, they have banned the use of guns during festival celebrations and funerals.
