A Civil Society organisation, Dynamic Youth Movement of Ghana (DYMOG), has called on the Council of State to urgently convene a meeting and pass a firm resolution urging President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey

Addressing the media, spokesperson for the organisation, Edem Seyram Tuttor, dismissed President Mahama’s decision to declare a state of emergency only on the advice of the National Security Council, stating that the severe destruction of the country’s water bodies is enough reason to declare a state of emergency.
“Our fathers and mothers of the Council of State. The essentials of life, air, water, and food, mentioned in Article 31, Clause 9, at the moment, are not only being threatened but have become poisoned themselves, and that puts the entire population at risk, including the next generation’ he said
The organisation has also called on the State to urgently convene a meeting and pass a firm resolution urging President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency.
“In the national interest, we therefore call on the august Council of State to convene an emergency meeting, pass a firm resolution, and gazette a proclamation that calls on the president to declare a state of emergency in strict accordance with the provisions of Article 31.
“It is our prayer that out of love and respect for God, life, and humanity, the Council of State will act expeditiously and preserve the sovereignty, safety, and sanity of our nationhood for current and future generations.”
President Mahama, during a stakeholder dialogue with civil society groups on Friday, October 3, 2025, said he would not hesitate to declare a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining if advised by the National Security Council.
He, however, noted that the Council currently believes the fight against galamsey can be won without such a declaration.
