Nana Kojo Amoakwa 4th, the Odikro of Agona Duakwa and Krontihen of Agona Nyankrom Traditional Area, has urged the government to, as a matter of urgency, end illegal mining to save the integrity of the Ayesu River.

The Ayesu River, which has been polluted due to illegal mining activities upstream, has caused the shutdown of the Kwanyarko water treatment plant.
Residents, depending on the treatment plant, have been able to get access to portable water for months.
Authorities have improvised by distributing portable water to the communities.
During the climax of their Akwanbo festival to raise some funds to continue their community centre, Nana Kojo Amoakwa urged authorities to end illegal mining, as several lives depend on the river.
