The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to maintain peace and order throughout the Akwatia by-election, particularly during the critical counting and collation phase.

Addressing the media during a visit to monitor security operations in the constituency, Dr. Yohuno expressed confidence in the process and pledged additional reinforcement when necessary.
“It will be well. You have seen it already, and that is how it will be. And when it comes to counting, you will see that more reinforcement will come in. The robust ones will also come,” he stated on Tuesday, September 2.
His assurance comes amid political tension following isolated confrontations recorded at some polling centres earlier in the day.
However, the IGP noted that the situation remains largely calm and under control, crediting the professionalism of officers on the ground.
The Akwatia by-election, triggered by the passing of the sitting MP, is currently ongoing across 119 polling stations, with over 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots. Security presence has been visibly increased in key areas, including Wenchi and Vawaso, to ensure a peaceful process.
The Electoral Commission is expected to begin vote counting shortly after polls close, with results likely to be declared later tonight.
