Election Violence a Threat to Ghana’s Stability – Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum Warns

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has issued a strong warning against election-related violence, cautioning that such acts could have dire consequences for Ghana’s peace and democratic future if not addressed decisively.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized the need for political actors, supporters, and citizens to uphold the values of peace, tolerance, and dialogue, especially as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.

“Election violence should not be tolerated under any circumstances. If we fail to address it carefully and decisively now, the consequences for our nation shortly could be devastating,” Dr. Adutwum said.

He underscored Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa and stressed the importance of preserving that image through peaceful political processes. According to him, no political ambition is worth the disruption of national peace.

Dr. Adutwum called on all political parties, the Electoral Commission, security agencies, civil society, and religious leaders to work together to prevent tensions from escalating before, during, and after the elections.

“We must set an example for the next generation that power can be pursued peacefully, and leadership must be earned through vision and integrity not violence or intimidation,” he added.

The NPP flagbearer hopeful also urged the youth to reject political manipulation and remain focused on building a better future for themselves and the country.

Ghana has largely maintained a record of peaceful elections, but recent years have seen isolated incidents of violence and unrest, prompting growing concern among stakeholders.

Dr. Adutwum’s comments have been welcomed by peace advocacy groups, who say strong leadership and early calls for calm are essential to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic gains.
