NPP Delegates Vote to Maintain Youth Age Cap at 40, Rejecting Proposal to Lower it to 35

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have voted to retain the youth age limit at 40 years, dismissing a proposal that sought to reduce it to 35 during the party’s ongoing National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The motion, which formed part of over 50 proposed constitutional amendments, aimed to redefine the party’s youth wing and align its structure with international and regional youth standards, most of which cap youth status at age 35. But after heated debates and voting, the proposal was overwhelmingly rejected.

Supporters of the 40-year cap argued that in Ghana’s political landscape, the challenges faced by younger politicians demand extended time and opportunity to build influence and experience. They believe that lowering the age limit could disenfranchise capable youth leaders who are still establishing themselves professionally and politically in their late 30s.

However, proponents of the 35-year limit expressed disappointment, arguing that the decision shows a lack of commitment to real youth empowerment.
