The Spanish government has officially called for an investigation into Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal’s 18th birthday party after footage emerged showing individuals with dwarfism being used as part of the entertainment. The move comes amid growing outrage from disability rights groups and the public over what has been described as a demeaning and discriminatory display.
Yamal, who recently turned 18, hosted a lavish, mafia-themed celebration that included celebrity guests, teammates, and extravagant entertainment. However, controversy erupted when videos circulated online showing several people with dwarfism participating in what appeared to be staged comedic or novelty acts during the festivities.
In response to the backlash, Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has submitted a formal request to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman, and the Office for Combating Hate Crimes to open an inquiry. The ministry emphasized that the party may have breached Spain’s disability legislation, which prohibits public performances that mock or demean people with disabilities.

Though Yamal has not directly responded to the allegations, he posted a video montage of the party on social media showing luxury cars, fireworks, performances, and appearances from high-profile footballers. Critics have argued that the video further glamorized an event many now view as deeply inappropriate.
While no legal charges have been filed yet, if the party is found to have violated current disability laws, organizers could face fines ranging from €600,000 to €1 million. Government officials have also indicated that reforms to existing legislation may soon be introduced to clearly ban such acts outright.
Interestingly, not everyone involved sees the situation the same way. An anonymous performer with dwarfism who took part in the event defended their role, saying, “No one disrespected us. We are professionals who choose our work. Let us work in peace.”
