Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says the Minority in Parliament is not against accountability following the recent attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to invite the Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev Ntim Fordjour, for questioning.
However, he believes that the government ought to respect due process in its quest to ensure accountability.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Middaynews on Thursday, April 10, he expressed concern about the treatment of some members of his party, stating that accountability must not be pursued at the expense of fairness, justice, and the rule of law.
Referring to recent developments within his party, including the case of Ntim Fordjour, the Minority Leader lamented that several members were facing different forms of persecution under the guise of accountability.
“Apart from Ntim Fordjour’s case, many others in our party are facing all forms of persecution in the name of accountability. We are not against accountability, but due process will always require that the right thing as known is followed,” he stressed.
The lawmaker also condemned attempts to intimidate or threaten individuals who speak out on national issues, describing such acts as unacceptable in a democratic society.
The Minority Leader also warned against politics of vindictiveness and revenge, cautioning that Ghana’s democracy should not slide into repression reminiscent of past military regimes.
He called on President John Dramani Mahama to rein in elements within his government who, he believes, are engaging in actions that undermine democratic principles.
