The Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has expressed grave concerns over the recent escalation of military brutalities, warning that such acts of violence have now spread beyond the Bawku conflict zone and are reaching his constituency.
Dr. Anaba made these remarks during a press briefing where he outlined the increasing frequency of alleged military excesses in the region. According to the MP, reports from residents in Garu and surrounding areas suggest that soldiers are using excessive force in response to perceived threats, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

“The situation in Bawku, which has long been a flashpoint for ethnic tensions, seems to be spiraling beyond its borders,” Dr. Anaba stated. “Our people in Garu are now facing the same challenges, with reports of military brutality surfacing regularly. It is becoming a widespread problem.”
Locals have claimed that military personnel, in their efforts to curb the violence in the region, have resorted to harsh measures that include physical assault, property destruction, and arbitrary arrests. Dr. Anaba emphasized the negative impact these actions are having on the relationship between the military and the civilian population, which could lead to further unrest.
“The military is supposed to protect citizens, but the stories we are hearing suggest that some of our people are now living in fear of the very institution meant to safeguard them,” he lamented.
Dr. Anaba called for an immediate investigation into the alleged incidents of military misconduct and urged the government to take decisive action to address the growing concerns. He also stressed the need for dialogue and greater community involvement in peacebuilding efforts to prevent further escalation of the situation.
In the face of mounting tension, the Garu MP has vowed to work closely with security agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations to restore peace to the area and ensure that the rights of civilians are upheld.
As the situation continues to unfold, many are calling for urgent steps to be taken to de-escalate the violence and prevent the spread of military brutality into more regions of the country.
