The prosperity of Africa depends on effective governance and accountability, according to Mahama.

President John Dramani Mahama emphasizes that Africa’s economic success relies on effective governance, transparency, and accountability. During his address at the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues in Accra on February 2, Mahama highlighted that stability, reliable policies, and adherence to the rule of law are vital for drawing in investors and fostering sustainable economic development.

“Businesses and investors flourish in environments characterized by stability, consistent policies, and the rule of law,” he remarked. Mahama expressed his worry over the disappointment and frustration among African youth due to a lack of economic opportunities. He noted that Africa’s dedication to democratic governance was intended to lead to tangible advancements, yet the progress has been gradual and often unfulfilled.

“Our youth are weary and disheartened by the absence of opportunities to achieve their dreams and ambitions. Our choice to adopt democratic governance was expected to produce benefits that enhance the lives of our populace and bring prosperity to everyone. Regrettably, the pace of progress has been slow and not impactful,” he lamented. Additionally, Mahama urged African leaders to expedite economic progress, welcome investment, and create more job opportunities for young people to restore trust in democratic and constitutional governance.

He emphasized that bolstering democratic institutions, guaranteeing free and fair elections, and combating corruption are crucial steps in meeting these objectives. “We need to reaffirm our pledge to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure elections are free, fair, and transparent.

We also must tackle corruption, which deprives our nations of the resources essential for development,” he urged. John Mahama further noted that sustained economic growth is unattainable in an unstable environment, underlining the necessity of peace and security throughout the continent. “As leaders, we must promote peace and security, since economic growth is impossible during times of conflict”.
