Haruna Iddrisu: Mahama Has No Plans to Cancel Free SHS

In a recent statement, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-Designate for Education, passionately reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

This initiative, launched by the Akufo-Addo administration, has been a central focus in Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, where he expressed his determination to refine and enhance the policy for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

During a comprehensive vetting session with the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Iddrisu made it abundantly clear that the current government has no intention of canceling the Free SHS program. Instead, he elaborated on plans to ensure the initiative becomes more sustainable and expansive, ultimately reaching more students and families across the nation.

Iddrisu also shared exciting news about the government’s plans to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders in a forum aimed at gathering valuable insights and recommendations.

This collaborative approach seeks to enhance the overall education sector, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness to the needs of the populace. “Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention whatsoever to cancel Free SHS,” Iddrisu asserted with conviction.

“During his campaign, he promised to expand the Free SHS program, reinforcing his commitment to the educational rights enshrined in Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Article 38, which outlines the objectives of our educational policy.”

Additionally, Iddrisu revealed that in order to fully implement the government’s proposed free admission policy for first-year tertiary students, an estimated ₵345 million will be necessary. This funding is earmarked specifically for “normal” academic programs, without extending to professional courses such as medicine.

In a gesture of support for students, he announced that those who have already paid their admission fees would be eligible for refunds, ensuring that financial barriers are minimized for Ghanaian families seeking higher education.
